Pros and Cons of Online SAT Prep Courses
If you are gearing up to take the SAT test soon, you may decide to study or prepare for the test in advance. Although there are many ways that you can do this, some students turn to online SAT prep courses, but are they the right choice for you?
The Pros of Online SAT Prep Classes
You can access the study course at just about anytime. When registering for an online SAT prep course, you are given a specific time frame. For example, your payment may include two months of use. Inside those two months, you should be able to login to the course at any point in time, whether it be 3 in the morning or 5 in the evening.
Online SAT prep courses are convenient. As previously stated, you can login to your account at just about anytime. This makes taking this course easy and convenient. As a high school junior or senior, you have a busy life. There is your friends, your family, your school work, your extra curricular activities, and possibly a part-time job. You may not feel as if you have enough time to breath, let alone sit in a class. This is where the internet helps. Most SAT prep courses allow you to move through the course at your own pace.
It is easy to find an SAT prep course. There are many courses available online. Perform a standard internet search with the phrase "online SAT course," and you will get many results. Having choices is nice. For the best results, do the Official SAT Course, as the College Board operates it. The College Board are the people behind the test. If that course is too expensive, look around at each of your options and price compare.
The Cons of Online SAT Prep Classes
Most online SAT study courses do cost money. As of January 2009, it cost $69.95 to take the Official SAT Course from the College Board. If you or your parents are operating on a strict budget, this may not be an expense that you can afford. With that said, remember there are many online study courses available. Price compare to find the best deal. If not on a budget, opt for the best quality program.
You do not meet with a real person. As convenient as online SAT prep courses are, they do not benefit some students. Many students cannot just read information or study tips from a computer screen. They need to read it in print or hear it from a real person. If you do better with a real person, as opposed to a computer screen, an online course may not be your best option.
You are working from a computer. When taking an SAT prep course online, you are using your computer. You are reading test questions from the computer, entering your test answers online, and so forth. This is not how the real SAT test operates. You get an answer grid. You fill in the grid using a number two pencil. A machine scores your test. Yes, it is okay to use the computer, but don't forget to practice in print. You must write an essay by hand and correctly enter all multiple-choice answers on the grid. Practice doing this to eliminate errors.
In short, online SAT prep courses have their pros and cons. So, are these classes right for you? In most cases, yes. If you can afford their costs, no harm will come from taking the course. You will refresh your memory and learn new things. With that said, if you cannot afford the cost of an online SAT study course, you are not out of luck. Your local school may offer a free in-person course, study guides and practice tests are available for cheap, and you can prepare for the test by reviewing your class notes, which is free.
