What Causes Anxiety Disorders: Three Types of Anxiety Disorders
The way to avoid certain mental health issues is to know what causes them. That way you can avoid the situations that can bring on the disorder. This works well for things under your control. Unfortunately, there are life events that you can't avoid but must, instead, learn how to manage them. Let's go into a brief review of what causes anxiety disorders of three types.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
The causes of this emotional problem result from a life filled with stress. Here are some common events that can bring on the fight or flight response resulting in increased heart rate, high blood pressure, poor digestion and sleep and more:
* Death or life threatening illness of a loved one
* Chronic condition of a family member such as autism, Alzheimer's, Trisomy 21
* Financial stress
* Emotional illness of yourself or a loved one
* Single parenthood
* A demanding job plus a demanding home life
* Having to fit in too many responsibilities in a 24-hour day
To take care of yourself in these situations you must be able to find time for yourself to breathe deeply and relax. If at all possible, delegate activities which can be done by others.
Social Anxiety
If members of your family show signs of fear in social situations, you are at risk for having the same problems. Researchers aren't sure if the tendency for families to display these problems is due to genetics or to learned behavior within the family. Children will model themselves after their parents. If a parent exhibits fears in social situations children will learn the same behaviors. If genetics has resulted in an imbalance in neurotransmitters and brain chemistry, you may be more susceptible to the fears you learn from your family.
Being in situations which involve bullying, intimidation or belittling can result in avoiding people to remain safe. This can occur in both children and adults.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
In most cases, the causes of this problem occur due to a sudden traumatic experience such as being the victim of a crime, accident or act of nature, or an on-going trauma such as being in a war zone or living in a home with continual abuse.
The body locks itself in the fight or flight response. The reason is to protect you and preserve life. The crisis occurs when your system remains in fight or flight when there is no longer danger. Things which are neutral are perceived as a threat. The result is an over-reaction to situations, lack of sleep, always looking for danger and suspicion.
In Summary
The causes of various anxiety diagnoses are a combination of the events of life with individual brain chemistry as well as the ability to take steps to reduce the stress response of the body.
