4 New Year's Resolutions for New Homeowners

Did you just buy a new home or are you about to? If so, be sure to start the New Year off on the right foot. For that reason, when you go to make your New Year's resolution, keep your new home in mind. In fact, tailor your New Year's resolution to your new living situation. For four examples, please continue reading on.

1 - Make Needed Repairs

Although your new home may be your dream home, you will need to make repairs. Unless you built your new home from scratch, something always needs to be improved. Is your bathtub old and stained from use? If so, order a replacement. Do the kitchen cupboards squeak? If so, replace them.

When it comes to repairs, you could literally spend all year making them. It depends on how much work you have to do, your current financial status, and time you have to devote to making those repairs. Whether you do these repairs yourself or hire a professional, don't rush it. A New Year's resolution isn't a race. Instead, start with the most important projects, such as those where safety is an issue or those you can afford and work your way out. You have all year to achieve your New Year's resolution of repairing your home.

2 - Redecorate

In terms of new homes, most homeowners move their belongings in and get situated. Redecorating is often last on the list. If you have just finished unpacking your boxes or haven't gotten that far yet, your home decor may consist of only a few personal pictures. Do you want to make a change? If so, make your New Year's resolution to be redecorating.

When it comes to redecorating a home, have a solid plan in place. This will help you save money by eliminating unnecessary purchases. Decide on a theme and stick to it. Don't buy picture frames, wall hangings, and wall shelves because they look pretty. Instead, only buy home decor items you want or will use. To save money, shop online and always compare prices. If on a budget, start with one room at a time.

3 - Mortgage Payments

As a new homeowner, you should already know the importance of on time mortgage payments. Unfortunately, knowing the importance of mortgage payments and making them on time are another thing. A mortgage is a secured loan. If you do not pay your mortgage, you will lose your home. As a new homeowner, you want to relish is your success and achievements, but always be one-step ahead. Not only should your New Year's resolution be to make on time mortgage payments, but to save money.

By saving money, you are able to create a safety net. Do you have a medical emergency that results in high medical bills or missed work? Saved money, your safety net, can prevent you from losing your home.

4 - Throw a Housewarming Party

Hosting a housewarming party may be the last thing on your mind this New Year, but if you just bought your home in the last month or two, throw a housewarming party. Not only will you welcome friends and family into your home, but you may get housewarming gifts. Of course, don't ask or expect to receive them, but most guests will bring something. If you bought a new house in a different neighborhood, invite your new neighbors. It is a great way to break the ice.

If you have already hosted a housewarming party or if too much time has passed, make your New Year's resolution to be regular parties. For example, host quarterly dinner parties for friends and family. You can show off your house, entertain, and spend quality time with those you know and love.
