Social Anxiety Disorder Treatment: Is There Hope
It's not unusual to be nervous when meeting new people or being in a new situation. Most people are a little nervous but move right through it. As they become more familiar with the men and women there, or their new job, they begin to relax. But what about those few who are so nervous that their heart is racing, they break out in a sweat and want to run and hide. In fact some do.
Treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder
Many people find meeting others so debilitating that they do everything they can to avoid social situations. This, of course, interferes with having a healthy and happy life. Your options for treatment include counseling, support groups, self-help programs and, of course, medication.
The good news is, yes, a combination of strategies and treatments can assist you in overcoming your fear of being with others also known as social anxiety. Many people have great success with various self-help methods as well as cognitive and behavioral therapy with a trained professional. Others have used alternative forms of treatment such as hypnotherapy and various forms of what is known as energy healing.
For those with severe problems, you might need medication for a time to bring you some relief so you can work with other strategies. Since tranquilizers are addictive you will want to use them for as short a time as possible.
Understanding the Mind-Body Connection
The symptoms of anxiety include a number of physical events such as shortness of breath, breaking out into a sweat, rapid heart beat and feeling chilled. These are responses your body has to certain stimulation as interpreted by the brain. For instance, someone you don't know walks up to you and your chest and abdomen tightens up. This means your brain has interpreted this as danger. This evaluation is based upon thoughts you might have had such as, "Maybe they'll think I'm stupid."
Since your body responds to your thoughts, one method of relieving the fear of being in new situations is to change the way you think about them. If you think, "I'm stupid" you can form a new thought such as "All I have to do is say hello and shake their hand. He doesn't know anything else about me." This is a way of challenging unrealistic thoughts and beliefs.
You can also change the physiology of your body by doing the powerful yet very simple act of taking a deep breath and then slowly letting it out. If you focus on breathing deeply and evenly you will find that you begin to relax and are less anxious. You are then able to handle the situation much easier.
