Medication for Anxiety and Depression Treatment

Medication for Anxiety and Depression Treatment
Although anxiety and depression are two different mental health issues, the medications prescribed for them affect similar parts of the brain. The brain manufactures neuro-transmitters which affect the mood of the individual. Prescription drugs are designed to affect these neuro-transmitters. This article addresses the medications commonly prescribed for these two disorders.
Anti-depressants often Prescribed
Anti-depressants are one of the most frequently prescribed medications. Different drugs affect different parts of the brain. The SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors appear to provide for more serotonin in the blood stream. Serotonin is one of the "feel good" chemicals manufactured by your brain. Some of the SSRIs are Prozac (generic name is fluoxetine), Zoloft (generic is sertraline), Paxil (generic is paroxetine), Lexapro (escitalopram), Luvox (fluvoxamine) and Celexa (citalopram).
Another class are the SNRIs or serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. These affect both serotonin and norepinephrine. These drugs are Cymbalta (duloxetine), Effexor and Effexor XR (venlafaxine) and Pristiq (desvenlafaxine).
Tranquilizers frequently Prescribed
To reduce anxiety doctors will often give tranquilizers. The benzodiazepines usually work in 30-60 minutes to calm the symptoms of anxiety. These are Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam), Valium (diazepam) and Ativan (lorazepam).
Because tranquilizers are highly addictive, the SNRIs mentioned above have also been found to be effective for anxiety. Some of the symptoms of panic involve norepinephrine and the SNRIs affect this neurotransmitter.
Interestingly, certain blood pressure medications have had a calming effect upon people who have extreme worries and fears. This occurs by blocking the stress hormone norepinephrine.
Be Aware of These Side Effects
The difficulty with medications are the side effects. These drugs work on the brain and its chemistry. Individual differences account for the varying problems which can occur. Ironically, the most common side effects are those which the prescription was meant to help, depression and anxiety.
Many people have experienced suicidal thoughts and have attempted suicide while taking anti-depressants. This is especially true in children younger than 18 years of age. Additional problems can be weight gain, loss of sex drive, headaches, stomach problems, feeling nauseated and nervousness.
The benzodiazepines listed above are highly addictive. People taking them must be carefully monitored by their physician. Because of the addictive nature of these drugs, they are frequently sold illegally on the street. Other common problems are drowsiness, clumsiness, slurred speech, depression, feeling confused, vision problems, impaired thinking and judgment, memory problems, stomach problems as well as vision problems.
In Conclusion
Be aware of the complications which can occur when treating anxiety and depression. When you have any questions or concerns at all, contact your physician for assistance.
