Anxiety Attack Symptoms in Women
Have you met anyone who doesn't worry about anything? It's common to be concerned about something going on in life. Maybe one of the kids is sick, or you're worried about being laid off, or are afraid of not being on-time. These are the common concerns of daily life.
Then there is the rather rare occurrence of a full blown anxiety attack. This is also known as a panic attack and is twice as common in women than in men. The big difference between "simple" anxiety and panic is the suddenness and intensity when the attacks occur.
Anxiety can be a continual state of being. These attacks, however, seem to come from nowhere and appear very suddenly.
Imagine you are standing in line at the grocery story. You're getting ready to check out when suddenly, for no apparent reason, you feel this overwhelming feeling of dread coming over you. You are suddenly overwhelmed with feelings. You can't figure out what is happening. Your heart rate jumps higher than you can ever remember it being. Your chest hurts and you can't catch your breath. You grab your purse and run for safety leaving your cart full of groceries.
Symptoms
The general symptoms of a panic attack are:
* Feeling weak or dizzy
* Heart rate racing
* Feeling of dread, terror or approaching death
* Tingling and numbness in hands
* Sweaty palms
* Tight or painful chest
* Difficulty breathing
* Feeling as if you have no control
* No apparent reason for these symptoms
These symptoms don't usually last more than 10 minutes, but to the person having them time seems to stand still. Once you have one, there is a greater chance you will have another. You begin to fear having another one. If you have frequent experiences such as this you are then diagnosed with a Panic Disorder.
Possible Complications
When this occurs when shopping or driving about, the individual may begin to associate these episodes with being outside. To avoid this extreme state of discomfort they may develop a phobia of leaving the house. This will not prevent the episodes as they can occur even when sleeping. Not leaving the house will, of course, severely interfere with the daily routines of life.
What You Can Do
There are medications which can help control the symptoms. Some have serious side effects including addiction. There are a number of alternative methods to prevent reoccurrences. A psychotherapist can assist in identifying any stressors which may be contributing. The individual may also find such things as yoga, tai chi, qi gong and meditation helpful.
